A NaWz or NaCj is not a weak character on D1. Spit poison is just great at that point in the game. Without it, I would agree that NaCj or NaWz is probably one of the weakest starting characters. Do you do a lot of stabbing? in trunk, Stabbing is (basically) the average of your stealth and appropriate weapon skill. Kobolds have a very high apt for it, as long as your weapon's at min delay and you're not having any difficulty in fights, why not keep raising it?

I don't know about tiles, but in console there's red text that says "Starving" when you are in that state.

You can also set up your init.txt file to automate eating of safe chunks, if you search the file for "chunks" you will find the appropriate section.

I don't think the AC boost from the CPA is going to offset the great resistances and invisibility on that plate armour. You might want to memorize some low level spells like Blink, since it's not too tough to get that stuff castable in regular plate and they give you great survival and escape option...
