Don't forget that Fighting helps accuracy just as much as weapon skill does. If you have weapon skill at 10 and Fighting still at the starting value, you're doing it wrong. This is a good observation. Ru's, Chei's, and Kiku's nukes hit each enemy only once. Have you tried using a scroll of fog to block LOS 3+ tiles away and blast a strong enemy 2 tiles away? You could also use lantern of shadows, darkness, nightstalker, etc.

If food were removed from the game, then ramping up miscast effects would be a good element to balance spellcasting. As long as food is in the game, hunger is an important cost of spells. IMHO the staff of energy has far too dramatic of an effect and should be eliminated.

Of your choices, definitely the robe with rF+ SInv because of several enemies with fire or invisibility. However, as you know, with only MR+ you are very likely to be banished by an ogre mage. If you have a wand of digging, it would be easier to get away from ogre mages in Depths.

Bribe branch is a bad value through most of a non-extended game. When a shop call reaches $2500-3000, or if your character is very well-geared, then you could get bribe branch instead. The effect is quite small, but it will make fights against groups of enemies a little easier.
