Re: CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what?

i don't think you're spreading yourself too thin, you're still level 16. you'll negate the spellcasting penalty for a buckler with 5 levels in shields, so keep working towards it and turn it off when you get there. if you think it's too steep now take it off before facing bad stuff. and i wouldn't w...

Re: SO... Have you cheated yet?

Now, how to integrate this information smoothly in the interface? A line in the description? Colour monster's name (console)? An icon like demon tiers (tiles)? colouring the monster's name (say green, white, yellow, red, using ash's thingy) sounds quite alright, actually. it may be somewhat intrusi...

Re: Playing a non-healer?

you have a rather thorough list over here, at the bottom: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Deep_dwarf for deep dwarves and vampires in particular, vampiric draining and makhleb (who restores HP and MP for kills) work very well. as a deep dwarf you'll have to rely on healing wands and poti...

if i'm allowed a tiny little bit of hijacking... i learnt recently about show_real_turns, which is pretty great, but since some update it doesn't show the cost of your last action anymore. is that normal?

Re: Remove Berserk Spell; Replacement

ice-based hybrids are pretty good, but there's no need for a starting build, and even if it goes in, there's no need to appropriate the crusader background. i don't know, i like them as they are, and if berserker rage is overpowered or conflicts with trog i like the idea of substituting it with pois...

Re: CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what?

it looks fine! i'd say try to victory dance charms a little bit if you have a chance, because eventually you'll find some of: swiftness, flight, haste, deflect missiles and those will serve you very, very well. don't branch out to earth magic, you have a poor aptitude and it'll conflict with the lev...

Re: Prompt at level up

my .crawlrc's full of them too, but it's taken me months to get there, a slightly infuriating incident at a time. i don't know what's the consensus on this, but i think the --more-- prompts should be enabled by default for pretty much anything meaningful, and you should mess with the config files if...

Re: Tomb without Necromutation

i'm hardly an expert (one visit), but you can do fine without torment resistance if you take it easy. watch out for smiting, though.
death curses can be a big problem, because for instance you just won't be able to heal that much rot. summoning's a very fine alternative.

Re: YASD - Death by poison. Fuck.

red poison from kobolds is really bad! turn a corner and wait, even if there's a timed portal. still, lousy luck with those mutations. in my experience, air elementalists have it easy early on with swiftness and repel missiles, but by lair unless you're lucky enough to find a good book you won't be ...

YAVP - first win (high elf conjurer)

not just a conjurer though. i always end up with more hibryd-ish builds, but i've only had bad runs with the starting book for air elementalists, and the goal was to test tornado, so i tried an air/ice conjurer. good times. this is nearly up-to-date trunk, post-nerf (i shudder to think what it was l...

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

to be honest, i don't remember. i'm running a straight-melee hill orc priest, so i may have not noticed. i ran away in like 5 or 6 turns anyway, seeing how i couldn't land a single hit. i've fought those once or twice in the past, but i guess i had sInv.

i went in without rpois and couldn't walk ten squares in. something invisible kept bashing and poisoning me. i was right next to the stairs so i got out, but i didn't hit it once. any idea what that was?

Re: on summoning miscasts

i read that, but it's not very informative. i guessed severity should be tied to spell success, instead of spell power, but it may be the other way around. casting spells at 95%+ success shouldn't put you in those situations unless the rng truly hates you (and even so!). anyway, what got me riled up...

on summoning miscasts

i don't play spellcasters often, but i had a nice vampire summoner who got himself killed by a miscast that called forth a hostile balrug. it was the second time, as i got an nice ice fiend earlier on. in either case i was trying to cast level 4-5 spells at excellent. how does this work? do miscasts...

i'm more of the bullet hell family, but if you want a modern old-school shooter you can't do better than gradius v (ps2 yes).
i'll try that hydorah thing if i ever install windows.

it always crashed for me about 10-12 floors in. i'd go down a staircase and then up again and i'd be in a new floor instead of the one i just came through and eventually it'd freeze. to this day i don't know if it was a problem with my particular setup or what, there's very little feedback about it ...

i didn't play any crawl for about three years for precisely that reason. then i got used to it in a couple days. needs a little bit of commitment, but i like it way better than the numpad. give it another go! on the other hand, i played that DS port of linley's where you choose a direction on the pa...

that happened once to me, via orange bloody statue in the elven halls. i was aware of the risk, and i was carrying a couple potions of restore abilities just in case, except... that i wasn't. i dropped them in the stash by mistake. so i died. but what i wanted to say is that i had nothing else to do...

YASD: my first drowning story

so here i am on shoals:2 with a very decent, fairly likeable level-13 vampire enchanter of sif muna (after a couple bad experiences i had decided to go with some other god for this game, and i find an altar for her at d:2, it figures). decent build, no weapons (still using a dagger of protection +1)...

they make good hybrid builds. i had a deep dwarf necromancer/fighter (i know, i know, but i loved the bloody fella) who was just incredible, and got killed on snake:5 due to my playing half-sleep (a guardian naga or something like that got me, when i had dispatched half a dozen already). the little ...
