I used to save ?EA for a dragon armor, but then I started using them in the early game (focusing on gloves, boots and hats/helmets since they're the slots that you're least likely to replace in the near future) and saw an immediate improvement in my characters' survival rate.

You seem to think that wearing heavy armor means you shouldn't care about EV. This is only true very early on where enemies are mostly melee and do low enough damage that heavy armor has a good chance to completely negate most of their attacks.
