You can probably expect similar success rates for both. The effect is similar to mass confusion, except the crowd thins itself out without your further intervention. Scroll of immolation is optional. Good places to use this: vaults (ogres/orcs/vault guards/wardens/sentinels, ugly things, etc.) orc (...

Drastically reduced line of sight means you spot fewer monsters, and fewer monsters spot you.

Summoned shadows get in the way of enemies.

All around great item if you aren't attacking.

Stacks with the spell and with nightstalker, if you like being nearsighted.

Corpse regen is very useful, in branches with corpses. Eventually you'll probably want invisibility and haste. Darkness is also a good spell for stabbers (reduces line of sight and hence monster's ability to see you). Shadow creatures and Animate dead will give you some buddies to be meat shields or...

Invisibility and stabbing will get you very far. Animate dead is great for support and for escaping; run through your zombie horde and leave the nagas/spiders/vault guards to fight through them. Pick up some evocations or magic so that you have a way to deal with monsters from afar.

Having a non-crappy stealth factor and a high stealth skill are probably the most important; at stealth 27 with a stealth factor of 18 (small or stealthy races) you get 486 stealth.

Nightstalker and antenna are a stabber's wetdream, by the way. You don't get a chance like this very often.

The same chance as pure fighters or "pure spellcasters"? What are stabbers lacking?

Whats the point of throwing the gold anyway, if you'll kill the monster and pick it back up? Even if it vanishes, a 75% chance to distract an enemy is really strong, and 270 gold is inconsequential.
