I've won a few 3-rune OpTm with Yred. OpTm is all about surviving the early game, so while heroism is nice, the zombie army does that much more to add to early survivability.

I found that Yred is a solid choice for OpTm in a 3-rune game. The build is weak early, which is exactly when a zombie army is of greatest utility. Yred wears off when things start rolling, but by then you'll have all the forms and support spells you need to essentially play without god powers.

I certainly don't intend to park everything. I was planning to proceed down one lung, exposing one enemy at a time, retreating to deal with it and if I can't damage it, parking it. I'd only consider running for it when I can see the orb chamber. It shouldn't be more than one or two things parked.

Probably pointless with the current implementation of lava. However, if lava was changed so that the player took damage from radiant heat from standing next to, or worse, levitating over it, then chasms would have a use as barriers you could fly over without being crisped.

Thanks guys. With the drops, I was plenty powerful enough to get through without them... I was just greedy. Good drops make or break a three-rune challenge game. One of the most challenging three-rune wins I have pulled off was a HuPr of Zin. I went for the old school D&D cleric flavour: no magic, no edged weapons. Hard to pull off; very satisfying when I managed it.

Don't discard Nemelex that easily - high evocations and a staff of earth is still a good combo. Does mean that you have to invest a lot of xp in staves and evocations. Last time I did this I saved by not putting any in conjurations. But with LRD, you don't need it.

Finding an early amulet of faith is amazing. I got one on D1 and by D3 I had flying skulls and wights sweeping the dungeon for me. The dungeon will catch up because I am descending quickly, but so far reinforcements are coming in before they are needed.

It is suboptimal playstyle and sort of against the crawl philosophy I know. Plenty of times I found an awesome glaive or double sword or something and could have taken a whole new path in life. I feel great satisfaction that I resisted and ultimately prevailed.

I recently won a 3-runer DGWr. It was a "pure" Wr - only Tloc spells allowed. In the beginning, it was a fighter with blink, like Marvin said. Post mid-game it became more of a stealth-based character, teleporting around, grabbing stuff and avoiding fights.
