That's why I said rookie mistake. I usually clear D:3, pop downstairs to D:4 and clear any hostiles in sight, then start ID'ing while standing on the stairs. Personally, as was said, bolt of fire shines for use in a corridor and for high damage. I was unaware of it's lower noise. If you see Mara in the Elf:5 Vault just go the other way as fast as you can. Addendum: If you see Mara, and you're as fully buffed as you can be, go the other way even faster as your illusion will indeed own you.
