Well, it's over. I managed to find a portal out of the abyss but it put me right back where I went in and a lorocyproca that wouldn't die killed me. Now that I think of it I had a teleport scroll, goddamn it.

The answer to both of those suggestions is that I (maybe misguidedly) was trying to get my AC up, so I went for the mace of protection. I do have an enhancer staff -- think the advantage would make up for the loss of AC?
