That's not the best range of interesting-ness, and if the "you have to fight through a tough, but known, monster to get to the temple" case is desirable, it can be accomplished with a small glass hallway with a door to avoid the auto-travel annoyance. This could be a pretty cool vault act...

Which do you prefer for a melee start? Personally, I find Gl to be stronger in most cases, as throwing is far more useful to me than a few points of shields. Fighter may have stronger very early game though (like, the first jackal pack) because of the armor.

You won't be able to enter vault without a rune, so you'll need to do Swamp or Snake first. In my experience Depths is much more dangerous than Swamp, so it might be good to get that rune first.

Try an OgBe. That was my first win. You get outstanding HP and perhaps the most damaging melee possible once Trog gifts you randart spiked clubs. It will also force you to learn good positioning because of Ogres' relatively poor defensive stats and difficult early game.

I rarely even learn fulminant prism when I play conjurers. It just takes too much micromanagement for me, and it isn't particularly reliable as a main AOE spell. Hopefully by then you can find something else, and if not, battlesphere plus mystic blast does solid damage.
