I'd go with the bardiche unless you have a really amazing shield sitting around. I would wait until my attack speed is at least 1.0 with the bardiche. As you can see it took 27 turns to kill an orb of fire (with +5, +6 bardiche of antimagic + might + 26 Polearms + 25 Fighting). So I would prefer to see fsim results (both for offense and defense), I suspect a single OoF is expected to win the fight vs +5 spear of freezing despite all those 271 HP....

Keep moving. Kill easy stuff before it piles up. Escape from scary stuff by blocking LOS or activating teleport. Do that until you find an exit.

You can train long blades without wielding one. It will be enough to have a sword in your inventory for enabling the skill training. Thus you can keep using axes while training long blades.

However I think you should not switch to long blades.
