My DsWi is turning into a badass...

It all started when I killed Crazy Yiuf and took his +4 quarterstaff of chaos. Finished getting mephitic cloud castable with <10% failure, got staffs to ~6.5 skill, and am now tearing everything up. I barely needed spells aside from an occasional mephitic. I found a brand weapon scroll and now its a...

Unarmed in trunk--use shields?

Trunk got rid of the unarmed speed penalty for shields & heavy armor... as a transmuter, should I strap on a shield?
Or is it not worth the loss of the offhand punch?

DsTm--Qazlal or Ru (or someone else)?

I haven't played in over a year, but figured I'd try to get through (probably extended) with a DsTm. I was thinking of trying one of the newer gods, and Qazlal & Ru both look interesting... anyone have thoughts on which would be better? I'm leaning towards Ru as it doesn't seem to require invest...

Re: Can't really figure out encumberance ratings impact

It should not require external documentation. My understanding is that encumbrance rating can be roughly thought of as "if you don't have at least this much strength, you're going to have a bad time". Not sure if there is any intuitive way to figure out rough spell success models off of e...

Re: Can't really figure out encumberance ratings impact

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Encumbrance_rating Your spell failure with 11 encumbrance would be adjusted by: (25*(2 * 11^2 * (45-armour)/(225*(str+3))) - 20)/100 With 20 strength & 27 armour, that is about 1% extra to your failure chance. With, say, 10 strength and 10 armour, that is 52% extra fa...

Re: Trying to go it Unarmed

In the early game, the benefits of fighting are so small that they are practically nonexistent. That XP would do a much better job in UC or doging or anything else. The formula for fighting's effect on HP changed in trunk; there is now a non-XL dependent boost (as well as an XL-dependent one) which...

It really is quite nice... I'm on D:10 and it has saved my life a couple times teleporting hard enemies, or sending them to the abyss. Like when I went in a bailey and a few orc knights with polearms came at me.

Hall of blades is probably the least worth it, the loot being particularly poor, and the risks not being worth it ever afaik. If you have excellent ranged weaponry / conjurations and escape abilities (extra speed), Hall of Blades can net you some extra XP with little effort. Yeah, till that anti-ma...

Spell success is irrelevant for a spell you won't get any bad miscasts on and that you cast before combat (delayed fireball). 4% for OoD is fine, but I guess you could get it down a little bit more if you like seeing as you only have 11,3 Conjurations. The thing is, your Fighting and Dodging are ve...

Until a bit of exploration is done, it isn't always obvious which direction is towards or away from the center of the map. In order to truly play optimally, there are a few tedious things that need to be done: - add to the runrest stop option all the spell expiry messages for spells you want to keep active. - recast each as it expires. Having some way to deal with really dangerous enemies is nice. Force lance only pushes a square or two. Fan of Gales is an evokable which does basically what I'm envisioning, but it does it in all directions, and it takes a while to recharge.
