So in the case of fireball, for example, tracers could also be fired to the squares surrounding the target monster. Then the balrug could select a target spot which wouldn't hurt it's allies, if possible.

Of course we can just say that it's a demon after all and not shy about hurting allies.

I guess balrugs can't aim their fireballs next to the target so that the blast wouldn't hurt the one who summoned them.

I don't really like it when a friendly balrug (by Makhleb) casts fireball that both hurts me and destroys my scrolls (this is 0.14). But I guess this is intended behaviour? Changing game difficulty level by scaling HP

I think the difficulty level of Crawl for new players and so called regular players is just fine. However, I also think (like I guess many others) that after Lair the game is quite easy if you know what you're doing and avoid any stupid mistakes. So I understand that some people would like the game ...

I wouldn't ditch Trog. You can still use Hand for more MR when facing banishers or sentinels, for example. Also for regen. And bros are always useful when facing dangerous stuff. If you decide to do Slime, a bro or two for TRJ make it smooth. Also wrath is not nice.

It seems to me that the rod works differently than the spell, which depends on location too. At least my current DDAs used it in Spider and got a troll, ogre, ice dragon, stone giant, ugly things etc. (Evo about 14 - 15.) No spiders. With the spell I'd expected to get usual Spider inhabitants.

If the wand or spell is removed, some aspects of the game have to be rebalanced accordingly.

My suggestions, _if_ something has to be done: make Haste level 8, reduce the chance of getting the wand with acquirement. One alternative would be to significantly lower the duration of haste.
