I'm no pro, but I'd ramp up his armor, dodge and fighting as high as possible. Carry an extra GSC for when Xom screws you and brand the one you have as soon as you get a scroll. That Dragon King armor is fantastic.

It is powerful, but it is also only useful for the first few runes. Most of extended makes it sub-par at best. None of the other gods have seriously stringent requirements for their brand gifts. Do you really feel like vamp needs them given the very limited scope of its usefulness?

My opinion is that the only time you should be using short blades is if you're a stabber attacking from stealth. Every now and then I will get poisoned to the red level and it can do a lot of damage. Having the spell saves me a potion. It's admittedly not super useful in the late game, but I grabbed it because it was available and I had nothing better to spend xp on.
