My first and only win (as a bad player, no less) was a MiDK who switched from a polearm to axes after finding a nice axe of elec that carried him through most of the game.

Then he switched from Yred to Zin, just for laughs. (and rMut)

I actually equipped the regen ring during the orb run, I'm pretty sure, because I wanted to heal as quickly as possible in the moments I had without anyone chasing me! Normally I had the +2,+6 ring and the artefact ring equipped.

Polearms are because I started with a polearm before my axe; it's not being trained since I found the axe.

The problem with that is newbies play the easiest races and so they end up with a low win percentage, while harder races have a higher win percentage because a larger percentage of people who play them are experts (I believe Centaurs may be the most popular species for win streaks?).
