You don't have to say "Beam me up, Scotty" when using a transporter. Very unrealistic.

Re: [CIP] CeHu^Oka with amazing equipment

Thank you! Now I also got a +2 cloak rF+++ rElec rC- +Stlth so I'm wearing that instead the scarf. Getting 3 runes and clearing zot wasn't a problem so now I'm thinking about doing the extended game too... Also thinking about abandoning oka for tso. A +9 holy longbow would be sweet.

Re: What are the actually effects of +str on damage?

14 [double sword base damage] * (1 + 17.1 / 50) [long blades damage bonus] * (1 + 17.6 / 60) [fighting damage bonus] / 39 [bonus per point of STR] ≈ 0.623 damage per extra point of STR. Multiply by 7 for that ring and you get 4.36 extra damage, which is more damage than +4 slaying (again, consideri...

Good advice! I'll try the lignification strategy next time. On my char I didn't have necromut otherwise I would have used that.

Re: Triple defense hypothesis

Sum of AC+EV+SH is a good rule of thumb. But note that EV and SH are binary: either you dodge or block or you don't. AC always shaves off melee damage. Even with heavy armor a melee char can get 30+ EV so I think it is worth investing in dodging after your stats are good enough in other skills.

Can a melee fighter defeat the Tomb?

I've just had another YASD in the Tomb. I thought I was well-prepared with over 10 heal wounds potions, 17 teleport scrolls and rN+++. But no. My strategy for level 3 was to read scrolls of immolation and holy word to kill many mummies at once. Which caused me to "accidentally" kill about ...

In my opinion Your opinion does not match the community's and you are not convincing anyone. DCSS not moving in the direction you want? Then grab the code, look at the git commits which shortened the branches, do "git revert" on those commits, build your own brew of DCSS and have your bra...

Re: How would you make Crawl harder, in a fun way?

I think intelligent mobs should chase you up the stairs. Not only when they are adjacent to you which they can today. It is logical that if they are chasing you and are a few squares away that they can see that you are climbing upwards. Hoved animals like yaks wouldn't be able to though because they...

Then you can just reduce the item drops and the amounts of xp mobs give. It's a lame reason to cut off parts of the game for. And ime, after playing with the shorter branches for a while, it hasn't made the game any harder, just easier because you still have enough consumables and xp anyway. Lair 2...

Re: I hate shorter branches

There is a certain threshhold of length/monotony beyond which a game becomes a test of patience/endurance/concentration moreso than a test of skill/strategy... and I think vanilla crawl is well beyond that threshold. Patience, endurance and concentration ARE skills. If you find games that test thos...

Re: I hate shorter branches

Then maybe you can play the sprint version of the game? Honestly, most of dcss is fairly easy for a good player. Some race/class combos are really hard though. So if you play well and don't screw up for the whole duration of the game, you will win. But it is really HARD to not screw up even once for...

In my opinion, the game was better when the Orcish Mines and Vaults were four levels, Lair eight, Nest, Shoals and Pit five and so on. The point of the game is that it should take a while to finish and during that time you have to play well because one small fuckup and you are dead and have to start...

a +0 shield of reflection
the -4 shield "Waisetos" {rC+ Slay+5 Curse}
a +1 buckler of poison resistance
a +1 buckler of fire resistance

Any good ones? Also what lategame God could I use instead of Okawaru?

CIP VSMo, trolled by Okawaru

I wanted to use unarmed combat and get lots of nice armour by worshipping Okawaru. But he is not cooperating. He has gifted me three artifact shields (which I heard is useless with UC), crossbows, random weapons and then I got the bomb: the +4 executioner's axe "Ghyqisho" {vamp, SInv} Clea...

Re: Abyss makes me want to give up

Stealth is pretty useful in the abyss. Even if you only go from "extremely unstealthy" to "unstealthy" it greatly increases the chance of enemies not spotting you. And ofcourse it reduces the likelyhood of a unique abyssing you in the first place. :=)

Re: How to play AE?

I've been splatting a few dozen TeAE's now. Some getting through the Lair and some even getting to the Vault. In my opinion, they are incredibly fragile the whole way. In the early game you only have shock which misses a lot and doesnt do enough damage. It has a long range and can hit multiple targe...

Wear an amulet of conservation. If every feature that someone sometime found "annoying" in crawl was removed there wouldn't be much left of the game. And what would be left wouldn't be very challenging.

Re: SpEn of Ash. What next?

I think you should max out stealth because with 27 in it, you can sleep-stab even shadow dragons. Then train hexes so that confuse is at full power. It allows you to confuse most anything. And if you can't confuse it, you can enslave a few of its goons to attack it. If you decide to go that route, t...

Re: CIP: LOBe Let me "Axe" you a question

Is an executioner's axe with holy wrath better than anti-magic for the late-game? Vampiricism isn't that useful and other brands are situational imho. I once had a exec axe of speed which was very nice.
