Thanks, it looks like that was the problem. Notepad was specifically trying to save mini_monsters as UTF-8, while it saved everything else as ANSI. That fixed it in local 0.22.1, though I have an old, modified version of 0.13.2 (my attempt at a branch long ago) that still crashes when mini_monsters ...

Crawl crashes when I modify mini_monsters.des

Any time I make the slightest change to dat/des/variable/mini_monsters.des in local Crawl, it causes Crawl to crash, and I have no idea why. I can literally open the file, save it without making any changes, and that's enough to make the game crash. I can edit other .des files without any problems, ...

The sword theme might allow it to work as a bailey, if you tone down the loot. Multiple double and triple swords is way too much loot for one vault, though; both are supposed to be very rare.

HOFi of TSO, offline. I'm pretty sure it was in 0.12, but I don't have the morgue anymore. Shortly before my first win, I had made it to the orb run with a HOBe, only to be killed by a Hell Sentinel + Pan Lord w/ Fire Storm combo. That death was the closest I've come to giving up on the game entirely!

Yeah, throwing a book in there with a flame cloud on it would be a simple matter. Would probably want the book to just contain Magic Dart or something, so the player isn't rewarded with useful spells in a Trog trove. As for manuals, off the top of my head I'm not sure if "acquire:trog book"...

Oka's gifts ("Improve") are better than Trog's? Antimagic on a good weapon beats just about anything Oka will gift, short of an extremely lucky artifact.

I think those only appear if the layout is tagged to use cave tiles, and then only rarely. I was able to get a level to generate that way in current trunk by messing with weights, so it's definitely still possible.

Since there seems to be a desire to give the weapon types different "placement based" abilities (reaching, cleaving,) I'm surprised all M&F haven't been given evocable trample. Could have a success rate based on damage dealt, so a spriggan with a club wouldn't be pushing things around ...

Worth mentioning that variable god speech on startup is supported, but only used by Xom and by Zin when under penance. Why not keep the existing line and incorporate some/all of your new ones? Variety seems like a good thing to me.

Does Trog gift antimagic on randarts as often as on regular weapons? It feels like antimagic shows up far less often on his randarts. Of course, he gifts fewer randarts in general, so it could be a case of small sample size.

It's a shame that chunks aren't differentiated by creature anymore. There could've been a special message for players who went through the trouble of getting a lava snake corpse on land and eating it. "This raw flesh tastes spicy" or something like that.

I'm pulling an idea out of the air here, but how would Displacement work as an ego on heavy armor? If it was on, say, plate armor, that would cut into the spell success rates coming from training a lot of tloc, as well as making it harder to raise EV to stupid high levels.

The only issues I can see are minor added complexity, and that sacrifice is guaranteed removal of a corpse, including the skeleton (e.g., in the case you don't want an enemy reanimating it.)
