Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Actually it's even better than that, as you can choose where the breath ends ( . key), which is where the cloud is placed, no need for a wall behind them.

Re: Thoughts on Draconian

Yellow isn't the strongest (imo that's clearly red or green, their breath weapons make the others look like crap) but I reckon it's the most interesting, and thus my favourite to get, simply because almost nothing else in the game gives you acid (and bleeding) attacks.

Warpers

Has anyone been able to make Warpers work? I've been trying for the last few weeks but I always hit a huge wall around early Lair that I can't seem to find a way around, which is massively irritating. I've been trying Draconians, since it looks to me that Warpers would naturally end up as hybrids so...

When Crawl decides that you will die

We've all had those games where you just don't get a break, where every step ends up as a life or death battle, when the game seems to just hate you and wants you dead at all costs. Share the stories you guys have got of when nothing goes right and the odds just never seem to have been in your favou...

Re: Alternatives to Wizard

I've personally found DrVM to be rather fun for the kind of game you're after (I originally tried necromancers but it ended up too dominated by necromancy). You get the random colour to give some unpredictability to where you'd want to go (I keep getting purple, which is even more awesome for genera...

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

DON'T hold the arrow buttons down to bash plants out of the way. Had a promising SEEE at lair 8, saw a hydra, backed off a bit but then couldn't find it, so I gave up and went to getting some plants out of the way in the vault, held down the arrow key and all of a sudden the hydra comes racing out o...

Re: YAFVP - DsFi 5 rune

I actually DID have teleportitis for my trip through the vaults, made it fairly interesting (I was basically invincible to whatever I ran across in there though, so it didn't cause many problems). I'll admit Beserkitis saved my ass at one point against an electric golem when I had the wrong ring on,...

YAFVP - DsFi 5 rune

Finally scored my first win after god knows how many tries (I found crawl about a year ago lol)! Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.8.0-a0-6177-gad2e507 character file. 2208364 Fagballs the Peltast (level 27, 200/200 (204) HPs) Began as a Demonspawn Fighter on Apr 8, 2011. Dunno what kind of Townsfolk needed this, but my budding fighter is thrilled to have bought it for ~150 gold on D:5.

Re: Mennas?

Gabriellk, it's certainly possible to melee him with a demonspawn, I've done it but it required beserking and BiA and was damn dangerous (I think my char was about the same level as yours, but it was a fair while ago, and I think I tried at least once and almost died before that). I'd avoid him if y...

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

I've learnt 3 lessons today. The first two everyone knows: D:1 GDA will never be found by anything remotely suited for heavy armour (DrNe! (least it wasn't a Spriggan I guess) Though since I was going hybrid anyway I kept it and started grinding armour skill later on). The second: Xom will meet any ...

Re: Lousy Demonspawn mutations

If you're already familiar with the vaults you'll run across magic mapping isn't anymore helpful than walking up to the front of the vault in most cases (there are very few vaults where finding them immediately puts you in serious danger, and antennae are better at warning you of those), and about t...

Re: Lousy Demonspawn mutations

I completely agree with your sentiments, playing Demonspawn's really often I tend to do the same thing if I get a lousy mutation first up in the first few levels (I've gotten overly strict on it because it's so easy to scum amittedly, so I've ended up at the point where I scum way too much), althoug...

Re: Chei fighter?

Pure melee (by that do you mean no spellcasting? Are crossbows ect still ok?)??? I can't imagine that working without getting a reusable method of blinking/teleporting. Losing beserk, speed potions and Haste wands hurts badly, and you can't run off when things get bad, I doubt the extra stats will m...

Re: Air Elementalists

Definitely whacking stuff with whatever melee weapon you're using is a good idea after Meph'ing them when you run out of mp, although personally I wouldn't dare try it on a Troll (my AE's tend to be Deep Elves and I've had more than one flattened by a confused Troll). I always try and find a decent ...

Re: Immutable Laws of the Dungeon of Zot

How dangerous the creatures spawned in the early dungeon (up until Lair) are is inversely proportional to how well a character's doing. It seems that 90% of the time whenever I get up an extra level or two compared to normal, or get good Demonspawn mutations I start running into Ogres on D:3, Centau...

Re: Immutable Laws of the Dungeon of Zot

If you find something that occurs frequently in your games, it will mysteriously be absent only on the times you try to take advantage of it (why do all the runed sabres I find littering the first few floors when playing axes vanish when I pick swords!?).

Re: What in Crawl isn't fun?

I'd like to add in something different that saps a lot of the fun out of parts of the game for me, shapeshifters and goddamn mimics, or rather, how exceedingly common they are once you pass about D:14 or so. It's at that point that you start expecting to see more unusual stuff to the early part of t...

Re: Which weapon should I use?

Playing a KoAs here, and have the choice between: a +3,+1 short sword of speed the +6,+4 sabre "Hikhar" {slice, Str+2 Int +4} I'm leaning towards the short sword (I think it does more damage but I've never bothered with the calculations), but the stats on the sabre are rather nice consider...
