A good trick for the spider rune vault is to clear the rest of the level, then open the vault, then run away at full health. This makes everything wander so you can come back and take the rune. This. An alternative is to engage for a while to clear out the easy stuff, then teleport or run to stairs.

As I noted, a hard early game, with some trouble with swamp rats, etc, and good luck early mid-game, with an early altar of Veh, a dagger of electricity, and some potions of beneficial mutation (5 in all), that gave me breath poison gas, which combined nicely with Veh's early gift of ignite poison. ...

Strange string of luck. !bene-mut gave me breaths poison cloud, Veh gave me Ignite Poison. Well then. Then found a dagger of elec. This despite an epic swamprat +gnoll chase early on that an ogre joined in on.

This was a PITA. Wanted the Tier 2 bonus, but my dungeon didn't spawn with a Jiyva altar any place convenient. Tried to dive down to Slime 6 with predictable results. Just as well. VS are pretty much not my favorite species.

Well, I did manage to put together one win with a new god for Pikel's Freed Slaves, though a monkey could probably have won with a minotaur who found such an early Crystal plate. I found the skill progression fascinating. Pretty much stealth only for a long while, then hexes, then a little bit of SB/fighting/dodging. Didn't get mindelay on dagger until bottom of spider! Supa ninja.

A relative skill cost screen would be awesome. Would be nice to normalize to something most players understand (e.g., one Ogre's worth, or one Dragon's worth, or 100 Newts' worth).

But there's a lot of room for guides, especially combo specific ones. Newish players are often confused about things like what skills to raise when, what to do about specific encounters you might experience early on (for example, what to do if you see an orc band, or a bunch of bees, or Sigmund).
