Actually the ring isn't so dangerous. If you play well you only have to fight one greater mummy at a time (instead of 5...), which is fine. It's just really long and annoying. Thanks for the tips. Just cleared it this morning : MiFi + Makhleb + Singing Sword + Gong Shield + GDA. Needed a few tries. Almost died to a mid level Draconian floor. Learned a few things, like the usefulness of fog scrolls. All in all very fun.

Fighting up to 10 for a start. Stabbing up to 15. Stealth all the way eventually.

Don't use FDA. Go steam or mottle when you find a hide. Grab a buckler. Shield 9, Armor 10 I think.

Hope you find charms & transloc spells soon. Those are nice.

I don't see why octopodes should be change. On an average run, you'll get 4-5 rings before lair, and a complete set once you've cleared it (... some of them ok). Rings are not the difficulty here.
