Trolls are not beginner-friendly at all. Even if you find a good dragon armor, your defenses will be pretty bad (because you are large, and have no gloves, boots). Hand crossbows are weapons for the early game. The problem is that this is true for shortbows as well. Is there no longbow somewhere in the game?

Wands are on option. Penetrating javelins are also good. Silent spectres are pretty fragile.

In a ziggurat there is so much XP that you can train up evo or throwing to a reasonable level lightning fast.

It is weird that the entrance is guarded by the toughest enemy you can find in the branch. The only similar example I can recall is that sometimes you see death yaks at the Lair entrance. Coming up next: an orb of fire on U:5.

Troves are always always useless. The weird way they are set up is that you can only enter near the end of the game (or never: I may have never seen a game with 5 resist potions for example). And near the end of the game you have everything you need or close. Finding potion or scrolls may be useful ...

Your current character can kill a hundred yaks without using a single mana, just hitting them with the staff of fire. So I guess we are talking about a different character (an imaginary "pure caster") or something tougher than yaks.

You can amnesia spells like ice form and spider form to free up spell slots.

Also, read unknown scrolls to identify them.
