Re: duvessa's spell guide for cool people

I think Borgnjor's Vile Clutch is strong, ridiculously strong if you are a durable caster or have a way to prevent monsters from trying to move. Smite targeting+AoE is always a big plus, and the damage quickly ramps up way above what any other lvl 5 could do. Downsides are the awkward schools, the c...

i have absolutely no idea how to make a macro. Bring up the macro menu with Ctrl+D or '~' (Shift+0 or AltGr+1 on most keyboards). Press 'm', specify what you want the trigger to be, after that specify what the associated action you want to be. After that bring up the macro menu again and press 's' ...

Hiya! I've been meaning to break into the exciting world of playing this video game where other people can see me on the web's site, but like, my main problems are lack of mouse support, which is a lot more damning than it sounds because having to stop every couple moves and figure out what key doe...

Re: Bultungin/Gnoll Feedback

Phial, sack, and box are some of the best items in the game. They generate powerful allies with relatively low xp investment (I usually train 4-5 evo before lair branches depending on what i've found and 10-12 by the end of a 3-rune game), and are spammable. A horde of spiders / a few box beasts wi...

Re: Bultungin/Gnoll Feedback

While it may be correct to go with a weapon if you find something very high end (and vampiric is definitely tempting), I always felt like unarmed and transmutations was a clear winner for gnolls. Since the downside of using transmutations is that you have to train roughly 3 skills instead of only 1...

Just jumped in to say I love the current iteration. Can play around with all the things I normally dislike using XP on, a gnoll game is always interesting for me. My favorite so far is probably the wizard start, gnoll isn't too fragile so magic dart+any weapon+throwing make it really easy to get up ...

Coincidentally, I teach a unit on pre-European Mesoamerican history, and I don't think Tzitzimitl is difficult to spell at all. The 2 might be correlated, I guess ~99.9% of crawl players aren't up-to-date in their "random cultural group" studies :) I had no clue what a bultungin/tzitzimit...

Re: Remove shafts

Instead, to make a compelling argument for removing or adding or changing a feature, you need to argue for how it would better meet DCSS's design goals with the change. In this case, I firmly believe the best argument is that traps produce grindy gameplay (tracking which squares monsters have stepp...

I would argue that a feature that unavoidably makes an already difficult game harder for the sole purpose of entertaining experts is a bad feature to require. You don't have to be a crawl god to find shafts entertaining, I also like them a lot. Not an expert by any means, know the very basics and g...

For the next run: IMO conjure flame is the best spell in the FE starting book. Does great damage that is independent of spellpower(only duration increases), most early enemies will not step in it so you can create roadblocks while you recuperate. Later hydras/hill giants and the like will just run o...

It doesn't actually make walls on all sides (and will disappear in like 2 actions) if your card power is bad. It remains super broken with good power though.

Had 19 evocations and drawn from an ornate deck. I guess it was just a super bad roll.

Killing them is my preferred method. Mine, too, but for some chars they are a right pain in the ass. Didn't play ranged since the revamp but I remember eyes often surviving one hit and getting in a malmutate in return. Same with thrown weapons, the wild damage variance is just too unreliable withou...

I'm drawing a blank here, what are the 100% guaranteed ways to block the malmutate beams of shining eye/Neqoxec and the like within 10 auts? I noticed the status the moment it got on me and checked my success before each cast/got the warning above ~9-10% failure.
Knew it'll probably kill me just didn't have any other options in the last 2-3 turns.

Spellcasting was mostly an aesthetic choice, 26.4 is just so close to 27 I had to get it out of the way :). I bought the wizardry ring when I got the wild magic mutation, only used it to get glaciate failure down from 14% until my skills catch up. 5% fail vs 2% wasn't that much of a difference, I go...

On the cloud part: monsters take damage based on their respective "turns", whacking them with slow weapons won't change it.

To be fair it's very hard to accidentally quit, it's just in my hands since I have the silly habit to restart some chars until I get the shield/robe/hat look that I like.
Not a good combo with the end of day mental state.

The spells I'm using are at ~1% failure so ofc if I find something nice with better gdr/ac I'm switching, got a lot of enchant scrolls stashed anyway. Not very likely though, and it'd take pretty long to learn to cast properly in plate or heavier so probably sticking to 3-4 evp. Swamp with the 7 ac/...

Ha, your Oka gifts kind of suck. But your floor pickups are actually pretty good.
