killing them with wands/evocables or javelins or summons works well. Having melee as your main mode of attack doesn't mean you have to sacrifice all other means of battle.

I'd probably switch. if you get gifted an amazing axe you can always switch back, or just keep going in Polearms till Oka gives you a sweet Glaive or Bardiche. It's an uphill struggle to get good conjuration damage with vampire aptitudes, and your mana problems get even worse if you have bad melee and can't finish off enemies safely without having to spend mana.
