No, it's based on gameplay effects. In DCSS, it doesn't make a difference. In Dungeon Crawl XXX, it does.

Meat rations are probably something like beef jerky, or smoked sausage. There's no blood there, that's part of why they're permafood.

The same thing is probably what makes ghouls prefer chunks to rations.

Personally, I've found that now that I have the basics, playing random-race wanderers is an interesting way to broaden my skills. It's frustrating some times, and I've sent a fair number of wanderers back up the stairs rather than trying an obviously poor start, but I'm learning new methods.

Too bad; I usually discard them as trash on my melee characters unless I can cover the resist malus they give. You should keep them in your inventory and equip them only in fights where you need them. At the very least, haul them along until you have been through the areas where Ice Cave and Volcan...
