Funny you should mention Iron Giants, I just died in Dis with 7 runes :(

Iron Giants and Juggernauts are OK - my death was 100% stupidity - the shrikes, the flayed ghosts, and all the corroders in general I could happily never see again.

You can be happily murdering everything you encounter postgame, but a single Brimstone Fiend on its own can still nearly kill you if it decides to.

I take it back, after the initial novelty (hey, this is different!) the Abyss is still extremely annoying if you're actually trying to get the Rune. I guess not everything changes :P

Agreed, I think the changes are definitely good and it's a better game now. Item destruction and corrosion going away is worth the effort of coming back on their own. Gr now feels medium-powered (little high, little low), but also like it makes Hells and Pan slightly less fiddly with the AC, flight and resistances (and by which point the HP matters less).

People used to complain about Pan, but for whatever reason I am enjoying it the most lately. Possibly as a contrast to the Hells, which have always been and still are a general pain in the arse.

the first one had some unlucky rolls and the second one was a Dire Elephant. Dire Elephants are jerks. So it turns out this phenomenon is true of Hell Sentinels too. Tank a bunch of them and think, this is going well. When actually the first lot are all just loafing, and suddenly I am at 23/168HP :o

Hmm, that's a pretty interesting point.

I had often thought that the first key realisation when you're starting out is that munchkinism and minmaxing are good. Pick one strategy, play it to the hilt. Hence DE.

But I am not a good player. Go with crate.

As others have pointed out, it's not just the turn to cancel lichform. Necromutation is also very expensive to acquire for limited real usefulness, and the XP and spell slots you spent getting there mean other, better choices not taken. I dont seem to be able to run away, most things seem to be faster than me This is largely an illusion, and once you understand it and where to move in certain situations (in particular, understand corridors and corners), your overall Crawl success rate will improve regardless of your character back...
