Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

- When a frost giant comes into view, using Throw Flame instead of Fireball is a bad idea. - Allowing a lightly wounded frost giant to get into melee range is a bad idea. - Running from a frost giant instead of blinking/teleporting/zapping that freshly-recharged wand of heal wounds is a bad idea. Th...

akira: The behaviour you describe for summoners is called "killstealing". It does not apply anymore. Now we track who does damage to some monster. So if you bone dragon nearly kills the titan and you rush to get the final blow, you'll 50%, not 100%. On the other hand, if you almost single...

A ring of poison resistance will save you from Sonja's curare needles. It will not, however, save you from stupidly charging into melee with her only to be eaten by an Abyssal welcoming party fifty frantic turns later.

Re: Bye bye victory dancing

From what I've played in the last few days, I think this part of the new training system is almost entirely better than the previous one (except for the issue with piety-on-skill-training gods, like Sif Muna). And as for the odd timing of skill increases, dpeg's first suggestion sounds like the best...

Re: Skill cost changes

The early game is still relatively easygoing, but the difference in skill levels seems to make the section between Temple and [Orc/Lair] noticeably harder. Melee combat against snails and similar enemies takes longer, attacks don't hit as often and do less damage, et cetera. But the main difference ...

The one that consists of a 1-by-(2 or 3)-tile "room", inaccessible except for a single stairway, with stacks of staves that may or may not be magical.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Never ask a scroll of acquirement for armor unless you're wielding a two-handed weapon; otherwise, it'll drop a +0 buckler on you to fill in that equipment slot you "need" to fill. (I know it's an intended feature of the scroll, but I can't figure out why. Handing out crap items to plug up...

The staff identification thing could be partly improved by having it auto-ID on equip if you have at least one rank in the skill it enhances. Also potentially applicable to rings of fire/ice(/wizardry?).

Re: How do I remove the Commands tab?

In Windows you would go to the "tiles_options" text file in the "settings" folder and remove the # and the ", command" from the line that says: "# tile_layout_priority = minimap, inventory, command, spell, gold_turn, monster" But I think that option was implem...

On the original topic: I completely understand the decision to forbid selling items, because I'm the sort of person that would be seriously tempted to sell EVERYTHING. On the many side-topics since then: - I'm with KoboldLord in regards to labyrinths. The greed factor is a good way to induce careles...

In order: - I tend to declare war on local vegetation whenever there's a plausible reason to do so (waiting for something, or victory-dancing my way into the Fighting skill as a spellcaster). - Lair was generally regarded as "boring", which it kind of is, so Minmay decided to spice it up a...

Re: Thank you!

I played ADoM for a bit, but it required what seemed like an unnecessary amount of character-creation details for someone that (in my case) was just going to die anyway. Still play Dwarf Fortress, and had brief (and unsuccessful) encounters with DoomRL, Desktop Dungeons, and IVAN. Other than those, ...

I like it.

One minor problem I have, though (and I'm not even sure whether this is new) is that pressing a key that doesn't correspond to a skill the character has will exit the skill menu.

It also depends on the source of the AC: if it's from (base) body armor, the increase in GDR is an important side benefit.

Re: What species do you never play?

Humans: as above. Demigods: I'm not good enough to go godless. Their stats make for some nice melee transmuters, though. Halflings: I don't play ranged characters very often, so there's no reason for me not to use kobolds instead. Nagas: Given the amount of time I usually spend fleeing from things, ...

True, but finding a randart is more of a crapshoot than finding a halfway decent robe and a handful of Enchant Armor scrolls.

YASD: Curse you, Mennas!

I was playing a MuFE, and doing pretty well. But while exploring around D:14 I fell through a shaft to D:16. Lucky for me there was an "up" stair nearby. I headed for it, and - Oh hey, another shaft trap. Now I'm on D:19, far out of my league, and looking for a way up. Except that the firs...

I really want to like ogres, but they're just bad. Even more so with the recent trunk change capping robes' enchant values at +2, which means your AC is guaranteed to suck until you find a nice dragon armor. (Or troll hide, but ogres are already hard up for food without that increasing it.)

Re: Better stash: Lair or Hive?

It has to be level 2, as explained above. And creatures do slowly respawn. Spending more time on a level gradually increases the rate and difficulty of the new monsters, and after a really long time the odds of it spawning unusually powerful monsters goes way up. That's why I use Hive:2. No hydras; ...
