IIRC it doesn't revert the potion of mutation changes, but it does bring back purple (mutagenic) chunks which work functionally the same way.

Even if that is true, you could be hit down to starving by a hungry ghost after treeforming, I guess.

Steam is basically a fire cloud variant. It also does other fiery things, like melting ozo/icy envelope.
