Questionairre about Roguelike development

I'm not quite sure where would be a better place to put this questionairre, so I'll try this. Plus, if anyone else who has created a Roguelike wants to contribute, please feel free. :D *** Hello, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup developers; my name is Andrew Meronek and I am a student at Macomb Community Co...

Re: Jewellery god?

Well, one way to reduce the "grindiness" of the problematic gods is to have the god gifts always be of a specific type, kind of like Ashenzari with the "slowing" item mechanic and TSO and his weapon boost.

Re: More non-demonic Summonings - Lead the Holy Crusade

IMHO, if you're going to add more summoning spells that give us more access to a greater variety of powerful monsters, those powerful summoning spells should become harder to find. Collecting all of the powerful summoning spells should be difficult, even with Sif Muna. Otherwise, that school could b...

Re: What is overpowered?

Yeah, the orc army clears out open levels (IF you have a bunch of Warlords and Knights, the other orcs just die) but that's balanced by how mediocre it is in corridors, plus the uselessness in many branches. I used to play a lot of HoPr in 0.5 and while it's a fun class its in no way too strong, an...

Re: What is overpowered?

The blessing idea does sound interesting. The ally resistance should ALSO vanish if the player loses the resistance, by whatever means. And I think that allies' movement and monsters' movement AI should be the same. There's no thematic reason why allies should suddenly be smarter. So, I don't think ...

Re: What is overpowered?

Beogh's ally conversion seems to be too high. With a little bit of micromanagement to make sure my Orc allies get properly equipped, I can build some extremely powerful armies that sit around in the dungeon until I want them. I'm playing a game right now, and it's stupidly easy with an Orc Warlord,...

What is overpowered?

I've played Stone Soup for several years, and over the time I've noticed that there is a bit of "power creep" that is happening in development. For example, since the original Linley's Dungeon Crawl, just about every god has been made stronger and NONE of them have been made weaker. There ...

Re: Halfling "sneak" ability

Halflings are not worse kobolds anymore. Stop playing 0.4.5. They got a significant buff in recent versions. Yeah, now they are a more boring and blander version of kobolds (fitting the same niches). The argument is not that halflings are bad (HaBe is one of the easiest 3 rune combos out there) but...

If you want to mix in some spellcasting, definitely go with no shield. Otherwise, I'd say it depends on what you pick up.

Re: What new race you would like to see?

If races based on different aptitudes are desired more than races with unique gimmicks, why not create a race or two that uses the skill system uniquely? For example, a cursed race whose aptitudes are randomly rolled at creation. Or, a race whose aptitudes start a bit worse than human aptitudes but ...

I'd also recommend Magic Dart if you don't have it. You didn't list any low-level conjurations beside sting, and Magic dart never misses.

Re: What new race you would like to see?

I remember seeing a suggestion for golems that would have been sent into the dungeon by powerful wizards as a playable race. Which would also be coolly ironic, because all the characters are in a sense electronic golems anyway. At least, golems of specific flavors could be balanced. For example, a p...

Re: Kiku: Pain Brand or Necronomicon?

Yes, the Lair should be providing plenty of free food from butchered monsters. And the Hive shouldn't be too hard to clear out with very high necromancy skill. The first several bees might be able to sting you once, but after you start an animated zombie wave, which is poison immune, you should be f...

This idea isn't a bad one, but how would you balance it? Making an already stealthy halfling even more stealthy should require making something else worse.

Because the butterflies have a good dodge rating, meaning that many monsters will get hung up swinging at them and missing instead of chasing you, you summon several of them at a time, and they are dirt cheap.

Re: What species do you play most?

I most enjoy playing a random race. For specific ones that I find the most fun, these are typically races that are well-balanced and have some unusual mechanisms. This means that I do not necessarily enjoy playing the most powerful combinations like Mountain Dwarf berserkers or Deep Elf Conjurers. G...

Equipping allies?

I'm playing a fairly decent Orc Beoghite Priest, and I've noticed that my Orc allies occasionally pick up weapons while in a fight to upgrade their equipment. No, it also happens with other large file downloads.

I have a dim memory of possibly similar problems being caused by a disagreement between the wireless modem speed and my laptop reception speed. Might this be the case? I did a quick google and didn't come up with anything definitive.

You have a lot of unidentified items in your inventory. You should start identifying your stuff. Anyway, you can probably kill them. Only pick fights that you know that you can win. IMHO, you should leave them and come back later when you have some better offense.
