As of recently, the {god gift} tag is not permanent. In fact, I think it goes away fairly quickly after being used by the player. Maybe being used by a monster can also remove the tag?

Having gotten the chance to play around with the new level 5 Force Lance, I kind of like it more. Getting decent knockback is a lot easier, so it makes a fun positional/anti-melee tool.

Crap, I forgot they had rPois. :-P Damage-wise, though, Sticky Flame happens at range, ignores AC, and hits every turn if it hits at least once. The bite and claw it uses in melee is reduced by GDR and then by AC twice, since it's two attacks. Even leather armor and 10 AC seriously cuts down the sca...

I can't imagine finding enough early ?identify to scroll-ID all your potions in any reasonable timeframe. Do you just sit on tons of unidentified potions for a large portion of the game?

Now it does both, Staff of energy even when it was "no food costs for spells" wasn't used much, and staff of channeling was/is a pretty small gain and only used as a swap when needed, taking both the constant effect and the evocable one and putting them in one item made it closer to being...

Quaff before you engage. A temporary boost will usually make a huge difference over the course of the fight, but won't save you if you try to chug it a turn or two from death. Monsters respawn slowly unless you took a ludicrously long time to get to Lair. Just Engorge yourself before you go and carry some raw chunks. You probably won't even have to eat the ration.

What if you transition in softly via a Gladiator of Okawaru or Makhleb? It will play somewhat similarly to a Berserker, except that you can pick up spells.

If the weapons could also not have AC/EV >> HP and rEverything++, then that could work decently well. It would definitely make monster Tukima's Dance more interesting.

I can immediately discern whether something is fire or not. Nature is a much wobblier call. Is Ice Storm Nature? How about Summon Scorpions? The school could work, but I think its domain needs to be tightened and clarified a little.

What if HoB were filled with skilled weapon users rather than animated weapons? It could have some ranged weapon users too, and maybe a loot pile at the back. Balanced carefully, it could be an optional level that is often but not always worthwhile and isn't horrifically tedious.

btw wand of hasting is actually a significantly more problematic thing for balance than the spell imo (and personally I find swiftness as a spell even more problematic than haste) I'm curious about that -- could you elaborate on why wands of hasting are more of a balance problem than the Haste spell?
