I'm guessing one of the random effects was enslavement, but since he was invisible you didn't realize it. "Nothing appears to happen" doesn't mean that nothing actually happened. His attacks stopped after those messages, then you killed him. Gods are pretty forgiving about you doing things...

Running a HODK right now and it's pretty brutal. Any class that can effortlessly take out Prince Ribbet, Duvessa and Dowan all at once is OK in my book.

I think that guide is a bit outdated, you should keep shortblades on until you reach the skill needed for the minimum delay of your weapon then turn it off, pretty sure it is 8 for quickblades, 10 for knives and daggers, 12 for short swords and 14 for sabres. Yeah, I was fooled by my own ghost before. It was even worse when I killed someone else's ghost online, then that player came in to observe my game and started talking to me. I assumed I had run into some kind of feature where other characters haunted you.

It was embarrassing.

I saw an entrance to Hive mimic. I wonder if you can use your known features / autotravel to identify those kinds of mimics. After I found the Hive, I found another HIve, and autotravel took me to the correct one.
