Chain Lightning gains damage based on how close you are to your enemy. It bounes multiple times. If you are in melee it is truly the worst case scenario.

And I got one-shot by this when I didn't know better. Worse yet -- I'm pretty sure he was confused when he fired it :(.

I agree. The only reason I use invocations is it involves the least change to the current system outlined by the OP. That, and invocations is the closest thing we have to "god-training" skill.

I've got to disagree, respectfully, with the OP on this. At no point in playing the game did I ever *not* understand that bad aptitudes just meant it's harder to train this skill. It's entirely disjointed from whether said skill was good or important for my character.
