YAVP (DdNe) 1st Win EVAR!

Wow. Ok, I've finally beaten this thing. I've been playing it on and off casually for a while, finally decided to buckle down and play it seriously for the past two weeks. A couple of things I learned/did differently (from previous tragic deaths): ⋅ Avoided trying to kill *everything* and ...

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Halberds have the lowest possible base damage of all two-handed weapons. You sacrifice a shield to wield a weapon less damaging than some one-handed weapons. Compare the broad axe, which is fairly common on basic orcs, and lets you wear a shield, has the same attack delay, is more accurate, and act...

Back to the topic on hand, I would suggest that anytime you run into something you haven't encountered (a unique, a new monster, or even a spell you're not sure of) you run it through the learndb . Besides giving you raw numbers, there are often some helpful tidbits in some of the entries. This is b...

Erolcha banished me when I was XL11. I made it out, went on and returned to her level when I was a bit tougher. She then fell in two hits. Revenge is best served with a double sword to the face. Erolcha did this to me once at about XL 12. I managed to escape (my first time!) and returned to Erolcha...

Air Elementalists

I've been playing around with dragonspawn and demonspawn elementalists recently, and I found that air elementalists, at least for the first couple of levels, are a lot more fragile than others. I think this is due that shock can be pretty inaccurate and weak, compounded by the fact that they don't s...

I've played a bunch of roguelikes and Crawl is better than all of them. I think Crawl is proof that having clear design philosophies and goals is imperative to creating a good, balanced game. My advice (and I'm not very good... I've gotten to Zot but never recovered the orb)... don't go Elf 5 initially, especially if you've only ever recovered one rune. Elf 5 (I assume you're playing trunk since you died to a blademaster; otherwise Elf 7) is particularly dangerous, and should be avoided ...

I think the message should say something like, "Your cursed items glow softly and fade." It only takes one reading to figure out what the original message means, and a player may read a spoiler to figure it out anyway. I don't think it's necessary to have that level of obfuscation on an id...

I do worry a little that there might be scummy ways to abuse this (go around and mephitic cloud tons of monsters over and over again?) but most of them seem like they'd just get you killed. This isn't really any different than spamming mephitic cloud to practice poison/air when your experience pool...
