Summary 0008973: Demigod statgain
Description Discussion/Idea: https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13618 [^]

Demigod statgain is changed from [1 picked stat every 3 levels + 1 random stat every 3 levels] to [2 picked stats every 2 levels (and once more at XL27)]

This effectively makes demigods the opposite of demonspawn; you can choose *exactly* in which direction you want to take the character, instead of getting a lot of random things.

The change also makes the stat progression more noticeable, which is probably a good thing.

It's actually ".. + 1 random stat every 2 levels", OOPS

The fact that they get twice the stats from leveling (and in less levels too) is probably also worth mentioning somewhere.

This is a good idea, I support it.

To sum it up:
Old DG had 13 random increases and 9 picked ones.
New DG has 2*14 = 28 picked increases.

That is net gain of six, plus the bonus of picking them all. I think it's okay.

Why not just have the +2 every odd level, for 24 total?

rchandra: That is a very good idea!

Not only keeps this modified Dg closer to current Dg, it also means that things start at XL 3, like for everyone else. I like that.

My thought was that, if we were going to do this, we should give +1 stat at levels %3 != 1 (i.e. 2,3,5,6...26,27). That would simplify the code (again), provide Maximum Choice (for those players clamoring for it). Most importantly, it wouldn't be a large, unnecessary demigod buff. No need to encourage PC power creep.

3 More stats in total being powercreep (unlike full-range bolts of lcs in the form of high fighting/throwing/strength javelins of penetration) and the solution to that being promptful (exactly why 2x every 2 XL was put out) and giving three stats in total *less* than Dg already have. (While being less unique in the sense that they gain 2 stats per choice.)

Demigods might be considered "better than the strongest races in the game" by some, but the status quo is that they're rather disappointing when put up against the same races in terms of raw performance. So it's not like Demi-Gods couldn't use a nudge in power, due to how painfully focused they already have to be skill-wise and the sheer premise they carry.
And it's not like those stats will come quickly; they come much slower than normal races reach 6* piety with gods (Sequell returns XL12.86), and a DgFi pumping str having 5.5 more str than a MiFi^Okawaru doing the same isn't quite as good as having access to heroism/finesse.

The penetration brand and (perhaps) throwing are a little too powerful at present, yes; that has no bearing on this, since (1) demigods can use javelins, and (2) even if they couldn't, one player strategy having become "too strong" doesn't mean that others should be boosted to match it!

Demigods are a solid mid-range race, at present; they are neither overpoweringly strong nor frustratingly weak. They aren't as easy to play as something like mifi^oka, since they aren't as specialized a race, but they have significantly more in the way of options. If you made demigod as good as minotaur at 'pure fighting', then what would the point of minotaur be?

Nobody is making demigods better than minotaurs at fighting here (not even close) though, which is what I'm saying here.
Categorizing a modest (and rather unusual) buff to an unpopular race that isn't very strong to begin with while also enhancing its flavour (for once you can actually go full Heracles) as power creep really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

They'll still be a mid-range race (even the initial patch version wasn't strong), they'll just allow for full customization of a high statpool. (If you wanted really high stats overall you could just play Chei.)

As pointed out on -dev, my suggestion of +2 per odd level is still 26. Whoops. (If Dg starting stats became 10/10/10 instead of 11/12/11 that could work)

Something that full-customization Dg can do that DE/Mi can't is reasonably use an early find like artefact plate armour / book of ice.

In order to see how the change works, it should be tried without also giving them more extra stats than needed - that can always happen another time.
