Summary | 0000884: Level annotations could use inscription functionality | ||||||
Description |
That is, you'd be prompted to "add to," "replace," or "clear" when you hit ! on a level with a preexisting annotation. Right now adding something to an annotation requires entirely retyping the thing, which is a heck of a lot of unnecessary keystrokes. This comes up rather often, too, at least for players that like to keep track of things like unreachable vaults and notable monsters. I guess having both the option to "replace" and "clear" isn't strictly needed, as "replace" alone would be sufficient (as currently annotations are deleted by a blank input). I do think that having both options would be better than this invisible functionality, but I don't care all that much about it - all I'm really looking for is the ability to tack something onto the end of an existing annotation. |

Chris's patch is now in trunk (0.13-a0-2780-gf297046), thanks! |

I think that, paraphrasing the report, it is a heck of a lot of unnecessary keystrokes. I'd say that a majority of the time you'd want to replace or remove the inscription rather than add to it, so you always pay the cost of extra keystrokes and cognitive burden just to sometimes avoiding several. This is even worse for item inscriptions: long ago when annotating an interested item (usually an artefact) wrt stuff you don't already know (determining that automaticlly sucked) or one or more of @x !x tags would require retyping the whole existing list of properties. Nowadays, this is pretty entirely bad as it makes changing those !f-f marks on throwables annoying. |

Er, applied?? This patch makes no sense and is outright bad: it would arguably make sense in early 2010, but not today. |

Would anyone want to keep this as an option, or would a plain revert + removal on items would be better? |

Trying a different approach (0.13-a0-2784-gc5a4dfa): no menu (for both level annotations and item inscriptions), but the input line is pre-filled with the old value. It's broken in webtiles and there may be a few glitches in local tiles. |

Closing now that 0007509 is fixed. |
