|Summary||0005049: On character creation it is [still] not obvious that grayed-out choices can be selected|
Upon character selection some of the choices are grayed out, and it may be not obvious that can be chosen.
It was already mentioned in the usability project (https://crawl.develz.org/wiki/doku.php?id=dcss:usability_project:report [^] p.1.7) and an improvement for it was "Now that they are mouse-selectable, this should be much more obvious. — jpeg". Except that it is not *much* more obvious - when hovering mouse over grayed items (or when selecting them with arrow keys in console version) their bprder/background is of different color, which may still suggest player, that the item can't be selected.
Now to the point: What about having a note "Greyed out choices are considered to be very difficult [and are not recommended]" at the top near "Please select your background" line?
It says what it means and doesn't leave the player clueless about why exactly some of them are grayed. There is plenty of empty space anyway, so it shouldn't hurt.

|How about dropping the greyed-out aspect altogether, and instead putting an asterisk next to *recommended* choices, with a note at the bottom saying "Recommended combos are marked with a *"? The fact is, if a choice is greyed out, there will always be players who will assume it's not available. Asterisks encourage people to read the fine print at the bottom.|

I think graying out the non-recommended choices works very well to make the recommended ones stand out. Much better than marking recommended choices with an asterisk.
How about only graying out the class/race names, but not the letters for chosing them?
Just mentioning what grayed out means would probably be sufficient, though. This should be done, whether anything else is changed or not.
|Hopefully not using the same colour for actually disallowed combos, in addition to the fact that a combo will sometimes be white and sometimes not, is now enough to make it clear that they can be selected.|
