I second the complaint, both for the sake of clarity to new players, and because this actually appears to be an interface glitch. My observations are as follows:
Upon starting the game, the default menu selection is the most recently played character. You can use either the ARROW KEYS or MOUSE to make a different selection.
If you use the ARROW KEYS to move the selection to the Dungeon Crawl menu entry (or any other standard menu entry), the selected character name is wiped out and activating the menu entry (via ENTER, etc.) starts a new game.
If you use the MOUSE to select (hover over) the Dungeon Crawl menu entry, the selected character name is not changed and clicking Dungeon Crawl instead behaves the same as clicking on your character's menu entry. This discrepancy feels unintentional.
Using the MOUSE to select other game types (Dungeon Sprint or Zot Defense) behaves oddly, as well. It will reuse the most recently played character's name, but create a new character for the different game type. If a character with the same name already exists for that game type, it will load that game instead.
BY FAR THE WORST PROBLEM (in terms of new player usability), however, is using the MOUSE to select Hints or Tutorial. If you've already created a character, this simply loads that character in the normal game. No hints, no tutorial. This is BAD for new players, because creating a new character (without first trying Hints or Tutorial) is what many of them will do right off the bat. After fumbling through commands for a minute or so, they may want to go back and try the tutorial. If they use the most familiar interface to do so---the mouse---they'll be dumped right back in the normal game without any form of assistance.
A quick fix for this problem: The same routines that highlight menu entries when you mouse-over them should also clear/set the selected character name. This will unify the behavior of the mouse and arrow keys.
