Summary 0002787: New Title Screen, Blood, and Meat Chunks
Description I decided to make a new title screen among other things.
(I put it in the Major category because i changed a lot)

I like this one better than the Original that was a picture of a summoner. Not every single Player will always play with that particular strategy in mind. So for this I thought it would be a better Idea to Taunt/Tease the players with Their Goal.

I also updated the blood splats and all of the corpses to have more dynamic blood. And the meat chunks all have their own special color depending on the kinda meat that it is.
(I was getting bored of simple puddles)

NOTE: some of the Ugly things corpses have Minor graphical glitches but i just haven't fixed them yet.

I have to say that I am quite impressed by the title picture. I don't see the current title very often, but is there a reason to not use several pictures?

Actually thats a good Idea.
I could make several Titles based on Different Races/Classes, if the Developers would be willing to code a new title page that would be able to cycle through the different titles at random whenever the title page loads.

Assigned to me? How sweet, you _are_ trying to get me back, don't you? :P

Love the splash screen, but would likewise favour picking them randomly (not necessarily using equal chances).

More images would definitely be welcome. Quoting myself from a post on the same subject:

"As for what to depict, obviously the images should be of a medieval nature. The current screen shows some kind of summoning scene, and I think it would be nice to also show off other aspects of the game, such as melee combat, combat spells, different kinds of monsters, loot, maybe some dungeon scenery. Wildly brainstorming, I'm thinking fountains, torches, a minotaur, dragon, heaps of gold, glittering swords, terrifying monsters with large teeth, glowing eyes in the dark, you name it. :p
Might be nice to get a reference to the game name, i.e. various creatures crowding around a pot/cauldron of boiling (stone) soup, in at least one of our splash screens. No idea how that would look, though.

I rather like the simplistic black background of the current screen, but doubtless other images could pull off showing dungeon walls etc in the background, as long as the screen doesn't become too crowded and the game title stands out clearly among the picture."

As for the corpse and blood tiles, I'd have to see them in-game before I can decide which I'd like better.

Ok, I'll start working off of some of those ideas you had.
I really like the cauldron one so i will probably do that one first.

The meat chunks work great even with the original blood.

Sometimes the blood splats and the Corpse blood overlaps in an awkward way so the blood looks really flat.
The blood probably needs some more fine tuning if you were to add it into the game.

I have added the title screen to the game. I made some code so that the game randomly choose between all the titlexx.png files. Adding new ones is trivial.

Sorry that it took me so long to finish the second one, I hope you like it ^.^
... actually I just got an idea for the Background so I will upload it again and you can decide which one you like better.

The third one is gonna be some dude Fighting a Hydra.
(unless you guys have a better idea)

I am about Halfway done with the Hydra
Have a look!

Just found the Trunk and i am was pleased to find that the first title had been added to it.
But I see that the trunk has been getting updating almost every day.
After a week with Daily updates I am beginning to think that you have forgotten about me. Or you didn't think i was serious when I said that I'd make more.

Sorry, I still haven't got around to trying the chunks in game. (I'm half afraid my computer is going to explode by the effort of installing git - last time it nearly did. :()

As for your title designs, I apologize in advance for daring to criticize without being capable of producing anything that comes even close, but:

1. While I love your design of the cauldron one in general, I think that the facial details on the trolls (or whatever they are) detract from the foreground image. Because of the greater detail it looks like those goons are more important than the robed guy in front, let alone the cauldron. Without them, the pic would look fine but rather bland, so I'm actually in favour of keeping them in the background. Just, if it's not too much work for you, could you please tone down on the details? Shading would probably work better than the black outlines of teeth, noses, ears, even eyebrows. Also, darkening the eyes, belt and lighter shade of skin might make them stand out a bit less.

2. The hydra looks nice, but doesn't seem very specific to Crawl. (I know the current splash screens don't either, but I hope you know what I mean. Actually, the same would be true for any other monster depicted by itself.) Could you maybe add some little guy waving a flaming sword or something? Ah, I see you're already planning that. Never mind, then. :)
And again, heads that are farther in the background should probably be less detailed than those in the front. This mostly refers to the leftmost head at the moment.

Thanks for the outstanding work!

Omndra: I am not a tiles player, but I like your titles very much. Keep up the good work! (jpeg is one of our tiles expert, so I think her comments are valuable.)

You asked for some more ideas... Pictures that a somehow characteristic for Crawl are:
Sigmund with scythe.
A troll burning a book (I guess you could imagine throwing a burning book into the cauldron).
The storm spells (now including tornado).
Oklob plants (could one grow out of the cauldron and spit at the hapless player/cook?)

Just some ideas...

Hey, dpeg - not every title screen needs to include the cauldron, you know. ;)

@Omndra: I've finally had a look at the blood puddles, once I remembered I could simply replace the tile sheet to try them out. Doh! I love the look of your blood tiles, but you're right: corpse puddles on top of your tiles look odd, so something will need to be done about that. It's probably best to only display the blood puddles if there's no corpse already in that square's stash.

As an aside, it does look odd to have the blood tiles disappear as soon as you round a corner. Probably not as jarring in ANSI, but still... I don't like it. :/

Back @Omndra: I also had a closer look at your chunk tiles, and I've got to say I still prefer the old ones. The new versions don't look really edible, and it's difficult to tell rotten from non-rotten ones. However, the different coloration *does* make it much easier to keep track of dangerous chunks, so a compromise might be in order. Colouring the pink fleshy part of the chunk while keeping the original shape should go a long way in making things easier for the player. I think you've chosen a good colour/effect mapping: brown = sickness, red = forbidden, and green = poisonous, though it might make sense to switch the other two: purple = mutagenic, blue = rot-inducing.

Attached is a tileset of coloured chunks (not including the base chunks). Though it may need some clean-up, this was when I had in mind.

Thanks for the feedback!

@jpg If you think somethings wrong with a Title please don't hesitate to inform me of your concerns.

1) Yeah i didn't like how the Orcs faces turned out either, only i didn't have any ideas on how to fix it. I think that darkening things up a bit just might work.

2) I was planning on adding a person... oh you saw that. Ok. The person is gonna be kinda small compared to the hydra. Sorry if it doesn't fit all too well into the crawl universe, Im kinda biased towards hydras as they are my favorite Mythological Creatures.
(I'll try to Darken up the heads Further back)

@dpeg
Thank you for the Ideas, but i dont think that we need THAT many cauldrons

P.S. I like my meat chunks (because they don't look very appetizing) but You're the Boss.
I think i would be able to improve the coloring of the chunks that you made.
(once i have a bit of time inbetween titles.)

EDIT: HOLY CRAP! I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO COLOR IN THE CROSSBOW ORCS BELT!

The cauldron+orcs images are just GREAT. Ok, there's only one part bad about them: the abysmal lettering, just like on a previous one that was already committed.

The huge pixels look just awful...

I don't know. I'm not entirely happy about the font myself but I don't think it's "awful" either. The stylized font does fit better with the previous, more simplistic splash screen, whereas for the cauldron one I'd sort of expect something fancier. But it's not as if that would keep me from committing the pic as the orcs' facial details do.

@Omndra: I understand your point about the meat heaps not looking appetizing on purpose (they're described as tasting terrible, after all), so it does provide a small amount of flavour the current chunks don't. However, I feel it is much more important that the tile is easily recognizable to new players.

Also, I'm lowering the severity. It's not really "major", after all. :)

Oh, and Omndra, is it okay to use your account user name for adding you to the credits? Also, do you agree to put your tiles under the Public Domain, "so they can be contributed back to the rltiles project"? (Quote from Crawl's license header.)

Erm, do we keep track of this somehow if someone doesn't agree? Guys?

@KiloByte
Thank you, but I can't really Fix it if you just tell me that you don't like how it looks. I chose that lettering because this is an old-school game and those are old-school Letters.
(However I did get an idea to make it a bit less bland.)

@jpeg
I would like to use my RL name (Mike Adams) so that i could use this on a resume someday.
I completely understand. Like i said before, You're the boss. ^^

I've just added your blood tiles - they're really neat! Thanks! Seeing them in-game got me thinking: Do you think you could draw some more variants specifically for wall tiles? Blood spattered against a wall is bound to run downwards, resulting in completely different patterns. It's okay if you don't want to, we can add it to the todo list on the wiki.

EDIT: Seems I can't add you to the credits until I can work out how msysgit and perl interact. Could someone else do that, please?

Umm, I would be more than willing to work on the blood tiles but i have been having some Technical difficulties.
I am rather baffeled by this but i cannot seem to login to my Mac anymore. Its been having alot of really weird problems come up over the past few months, but nothing too bad. However I no longer access the Photoshop files I had on that machine.
(or photoshop for that matter)

I could try to use Gimp to do the blood tiles but untill i figure out how to get back into my account, (the other accounts still work for some silly reason)
I cant work on the title screens anymore.

However, I am not a big fan of gimp. That and the fact that my Mac has decided to Personally block me from accessing my files kinda has me a little bit depressed right now.

Omndra: I'd like to rename all title images to title_author_name (like vaults). Do you have ideas for names for the 2 title images you've submitted?

Well the Computer is fixed, but i Lost all of my Software and Files...
The first one with the Demon thing should be ZotDemon_Mike
The Second one with the Orcs should be StoneSoup_Mike

Why postfix the title with Mike? I said title_author_name. So do you mean title_Omndra_ZotDemon_Mike or title_Mike_ZotDemon? I think you're better known as Omndra around here so I'd rather use your pseudo, but it's your call.

About the title letters, personally, I don't see crawl as an old-school game, but as a modern rogue-like.
