Summary 0012687: FR: simplify looking at monster standing on a pile of loot (plus adjacent bug).
Description FR: When you try to 'xv' a tile that contains both monster and items you are given menu where you could choose what to look at. In 99.9% cases it's the monster players will choose. Sometimes there is even need to examine several surrounding monsters. And you need to adapt what keys to press depending on presense of items under their feet. That's really bad. I petition to sacrifice the .1% cases for the better UI in the rest of them.

Adjacent bug: if you press 'xva', examining description of the monster standing on a pile of items (or the first item of the pile), then after you press 'Esc' once, you exit the description. After second 'Esc' press you expect to exit 'v' menu (list of items on the spot) leaving you in 'x' menu, but you got thrown out of both. It's really inconvenient if you want to inspect several monsters on top of items. Even if the above FR is satisfied, the bug will stay for the items in piles.

I've fixed the adjacent bug in https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commit/e58dc06b8e11a625bf23f6b4db381f0b814d6bd0. [^]

Re the FR, the monster should always appear first in this list and so be consistently selectable with `a` (or enter), so the keypresses should be consistent, but the description implies this isn't the case. Am I missing something? (Or maybe the complaint is just about monsters with an item vs monsters without?)

I don't think that we can accommodate this FR in a way that would prevent being able to examine the item piles, so it would need a fairly substantial revision of the relevant UI, e.g. allowing switching between describable objects from the describe popup itself, rather than having a menu=>popup structure. That's probably a good idea but won't come any time soon.
