Summary 0010103: Fire storm default targeting is broken
Description In this real-life example the player tries to cast fire storm and the game auto targets the *, which will not hit the U without a radius 3 explosion (default being 2)

.#....#...#
#.....#*..#
........#..
..#...#.#..
..@.....U..
#..........

While I'm here, I'd like to complain further. So often when you are firing fire storm at a group of things one beyond max range it will default to an extremely inefficient spot, for example:

.....oooooo
...*.......
...........
...........
...........
...........
.....@.....

Fire storm will daintily target itself to kill the orc on the end of the row missing all of the others.

The first example is a bug, fixed in 7118601d.

The second is a feature request, which will require some more thought - this is just one of many cases where autotargeting could be smarter. Should cloud spells try to maximize the number of affected squares between you and the monster? Should beam spells try to maximize the number of affected monsters by aiming toward the back of a pack? Should smite-targeted spells try to aim at the most dangerous monster even if it's not the closest (and what would dangerous mean)? Should bouncy spells autotarget walls for the optimal number of bounces? The answer to all of these questions could theoretically be yes, but we should probably decide how smart we really want autotargeting to try to be.
