On the same level as the lair entrance, D:9, I encountered a xom vault. it had metal walls with a few translucent ones, and was open on the northern side; inside were two very high level shapeshifters. One escaped, turned into a ghost moth, and you can guess the result to that. When I mentioned it to ##crawl, mikee and others recalled that the vault should have been completely enclosed
I don't mind OOD deaths, but this vault reminds me of the old spider lair ghost moth map, which was usually mid-lair, had a warning message on finding the ghost moth, and an immediate portal out, and that was -still- taken out. I'd suggest this vault at least have its shapeshifters toned down in HD. |

This sounds like xom_shifter_show in overflow.des. The vault is enclosed, but the glass is diggable. It was probably eaten by a boring beetle (could have been one of the shapeshifters).
Also, simply changing this to use undiggable glass won't work. A shapeshifter can turn into a rock worm and escape the vault that way.
If this is a problem I think the vault should be removed as an overflow vault, and made to spawn deeper. But, as it currently is, you have to be exceptionally unlucky to die to it.

Maybe exceptionally unlucky to die to it, but not that unlucky to have the shapeshifters escape. There are at least four forms that can escape it: rock worm, boring beetle, boulder beetle, and eye of devastation. Which is annoying - overflow vaults shouldn't be so dangerous as to force you off the level. Making the glass undiggable would help: then only one form could escape, and it wouldn't be one that has an immediately accessible ranged weapon. |
