Summary 0005857: Location Inappropriate Vaults
Description I have noticed that the very large vault with the grass floor, plants and many Gnolls is appearing when it definitely should not:
D:1 - Almost guaranteed to kill an early character
L:2 - Renders the creation of an early stash difficult

I'm not sure what vault you're talking about. There are some recent ones with gnolls in a forest, but they can't spawn on D:1 (D:2 is valid).

If you can point out the vault, I will take a look at it. If you don't have the name of it, a screenshot is good enough. Otherwise I'm going to close this.

Regarding your two points:

Gnolls can spawn normally on D:1 (packs cannot). A vault that places a small number of gnolls is not unreasonable at this depth. On D:2, packs of gnolls can appear. Gnolls are the sort of monster you'd expect in a large vault on this level.

As for the stashing thing, this is not a concern. You should never have enough items by d:2 that you need to make a stash. And besides that, *any* level with intelligent enemies can have them picking up items... this includes every level in D, whether it has a vault or not.

Here it is as it appeared in Lair. This also appeared, in another game, on D:1.

Also, despite stashing not being a problem, a gnoll vault in lair does not seem to fit in with the flavor of lair.

There were already intelligent creatures in Lair, anyway: uniques, and some guardians of the Snake and Shoals entrances. If you care enough to stash on Lair:2 instead of Lair:1, you should also care enough to clear the level, at which point you'll only have the usual unintelligent Lair spawns (at least until the OOD timer hits).

That said, I can see the argument for keeping the number intelligent creatures in Lair to a minimum.

Does anyone know which vault this is? I can't agree that Lair:2 is a bug, but if it's spawning on D:1 that's a problem. Otherwise we should close this issue.

I remember looking briefly into this at the time this was reported; it was one of wad's woods vaults (then recently added) for which the depth was subsequently adjusted - in particular, the ones that place gnolls no longer place in D at all, and have an extremely low weight for their placement in Lair.

I think we can safely close this.

Closing per sgrunt's comment
