Summary 0004527: Smaller Brand / Ego Icons
Description As per a request in the wiki, I remade all of the brand / ego / item subtype icons that I could find at a standard size of 11x11, including the black border. For comparison, the current ones are up to 16x16 without a border.

They're in one big file for ease of editing, but I can separate them out if necessary. I just looked at the relevant folders in Git for reference, so they're in alphabetical order within each section (though obviously if I did a good job they should be self-explanatory).

They look incredibly well and shiny!
But I still feel it might be a bit hard to distinguish some of them. Maybe 11*11 is just not enough for some?

DEX, STR and INT are a bit hard to read -- the third symbols in each three-letter "word" have less contrast than the first ones. Maybe it would be better to use the brightest colour for all the symbols?

Here are some brighter D/I/S icons. I'm hesitant to make them a flat color since the letters kind of blend together.

Which are you having trouble differentiating? I'd be glad to change them. 11x11 is certainly a pretty small space to work in, but hopefully I can make something work.

STR looks definitely better now!

By the way, somewhy it is much easier to read the symbols with "shiny" feeling (those white pixels). Maybe they let me differentiate them better...
In the addendum picture, the three rightmost symbols are the easiest to read.

Incredible pixel art, by the way. =)

I think these all look really awesome! I feel like they'll all make clear sense when they're on the tiles themselves, though I feel like maybe Enchant Armour is hard to visually parse. I can tell what's going on, based on Curse Armour, but you may want to make the inside of the helmet (like the eye-face hole) black instead of glowing green, so it is more clearly a helmet.

I especially like the Distortion brand icon. It looks SCARY when zoomed: awesome work.

For clarification, there's no real need for smaller icons for the consumables where the base icons either all look the same (scrolls) or are unimportant (potions, wands). This is completely different for branded weapons and armour, which was why I requested the smaller icons. Off-hand I don't recognize all of them, but I suspect this is largely because it's been a few months since I last had a look at the tiles.

Thanks! <3

Please, jpeg, use them for potions, wands and scrolls, too! They look too awesome to be thrown into /UNUSED.

Ah. Yeah, I didn't know what all was needed so I just made 'em all. Potions in particular have that label thing, don't they?

Anyways, glad you guys like them. Let me know if any need changing etc.

I personally would like all those icons to replace the current ones.

I made a new scroll tile, and tried out ontoclasm's icons on them.

I have to say, these are all so small that most of them look like blobs of colour to me. I have to squint to make them out, I'd hate to try to tell apart enchant weapon 2 and 3 for example - they're practically identical.

I think jpeg made a good point. On consumables that use the same base tile, the icons can be much bigger. I think I've also seen an open ticket to replace the base tiles for scrolls with different colors (in addition to the brand icon).

I suppose I can make some larger ones for items other than weapons and armor. It'll take me a while though, and I haven't looked at these since November, so give me a few days.

Edit: also, uggh, what was I thinking with these colors. These things've got like seven different shades of red-orange. I'll fix that too.

Okay, here are some 15x15 icons for amulets (first two rows), rings (next three), staves (next two) and scrolls (last three). At the end of the scroll section, after the red shield icon for ?vuln, is an alternate for ?amnesia -- I can't decide if I like the "crossed-out book" or the "empty brain."

(Oh, and the shield, sword, and helm after the amulet section are just templates, ignore them, sorry)

I'll do the others over the next few weeks hopefully.

Edit: for reference, precisely which item types should have 11x11 tags and which 15x15? Should I bother doing potion tags or just ignore them?

Nice! It will be a bit annoying to learn the new symbols, but they look much better than the current ones! The DEX, INT and STR ones are a bit hard to read in my opinion.

Okay, finished these all up. brands6.png has:

11x11:
armor
weapons

15x15:
amulets
rings
staves
scrolls
wands
rods
potions

I know the potion icons don't fit the current tag-thing, so I'll probably remake it. Hopefully they're all still in alphabetical order within each item type - send me a message or ask me on ##crawl if I've done something stupid or it's difficult to figure out which is which.

Can the chaos brand icon ('?', 3rd row, 3rd column) be changed to that of scroll of random uselessness, please?
They both have multi-colored question mark, but the chaos one looks rather dark and dull without the green sheen at its right, IMO.

I think the poison icons should be purple to match the player/monster tile condition icon. Or else that icon should be changed green. Either way, there should be consistency in the colour of poison.

These look great in theory, but so far I'm not a fan. I don't know if it's the change, or what.

Potion of Brilliance is INT, but I don't find the new +INT potions as distinct from them. EDIT: An idea, since Brilliance doesn't necessarily increase INT but does other stuff as well (according to a recent post on the Tavern, or I'm misreading that as increased INT gives you better oomph) would be to go back to the symbols for Brilliance / Might / Agility, but use a BRAIN instead of a WIZARD HAT for Brilliance. Keep it all body parts.

Chopping symbol is nice, except it gets lost on an in-use tile (green background).

Purple magic resistance / magical power is nice, except when on the dark gray background; they vanish and don't look distinct enough from each other.

Overall, the symbols seem too small, and the colored words don't feel readable.

I agree with most of the above points. While many of the new icons look nicer than the old ones in some senses, I find them substantially less readily distinguishable than the old ones were. I personally think it's more important that such central information be clear at a glance, rather than look 'nicer'.

Not only do the new icons for might/agility/brilliance look overly similar to gain str/dex/int (a conflation the old set didn't have), but the stat boost is often not even the most important thing those potions do. For might in particular, the bonus str is largely irrelevant compared to the slaying bonus. It's already a minor issue that people can mistake the damage bonus as coming from the extra str, and I think the new icon only makes this worse.

There are also several other cases where I think the new icons are less clear than the old ones. I find that the new fog icon blends with the scroll background given the color change, and curse armor and remove curse are a lot more similar to each other now than they used to be. In fact, several icons that used to be differently colored are now all the same. Recharging was green, fear blue, and teleport/blinking purple, while ALL of these are now purple. (Incidentally, I think the recharging icon looks oddly like a baby rattle, rather than a wand, due to the change in proportion). Draining also got changed to purple, despite the color of draining bolts being grey/black (the same color as the old draining icon)

This may be more of a personal point, but I also find it a little jarring that the icon for teleport is so similar to the old staff of enchantment icon (with which is has essentially nothing in common). Also, teleportation and blinking are much similar than before, with both of them being purple spirals of different kinds. I feel the old icon much better conveyed the idea that blinking was a more controlled translocation.

Additionally, I understand that the smaller brand size was part of the original implementable, but I'm still not sure what purpose it serves other than to make the icons harder to see. Less of the icon for the branded item is concealed, true, but the majority of it was still visible with the larger icons (and far more than enough to unambiguously ascertain its type). This smaller size only compounds some of the other issues in distinguishability, in my opinion.

I remade the !brilliance etc icons as well as ?rech.

The rest I'm not sure I agree with you on. Yes, some things that were different colors are now the same color, but many things that were the same color are now different. Yes, teleport and blinking are both (extremely different) purple spirals. They are both also emergency scrolls used to teleport your character around.

As for the size, that's not my decision. If a dev asks for larger weapon/armour icons, I'll make them.

And here's a green poison condition icon if we want that. Magenta probably shows up better on different backgrounds, but green is the more commonly-used poison color, so I leave it up to you.

Sustenance green symbol blends a lot with the green background, even if the background is a bit speckled. Recommend thickening the black border or using a different shade; darker by a pip?

I'm assuming we put feedback here, or should we be discussing on Tavern?
